Karen, Kevin & George the Airedale

It was sometime in March 2019 when Karen, sitting in her armchair with a newly broken arm, asked me out of the clear blue, “So, how are you making out on that camper you’ve been talking about?” Her underlying tease was certainly right about one thing. To date, I had pretty much been all talk and no action. The reality was that I had lost my wife only two years before and the dream of hitting the road just needed to pause a bit. For Karen, who had lost her husband not quite five years previously, a road trip in a camper wasn’t really at the top of her list of adventures, but she was interested if the vehicle was “nice.”

Perhaps out of self-interest, or perhaps to give me a shot in the arm, she got online and within ten minutes handed her computer over to me to view something called the “Bowlus Road Chief.” Now, I was supposedly the one who had done all of the research on these things, but I have to admit that this particular travel trailer had eluded me. Not only had she found something beautiful and “nice,” but the Road Chief seemed to embody the best of all that I had learned about RVs and travel trailers previously. Even better, it was shown on their website being towed by my exact tow vehicle. The stars seemed to be aligned and the next thing I knew, we were booking a flight for two to Los Angeles to visit the nearby Bowlus Road Chief factory in Oxnard.

The rest is history. We made a deposit and grew more excited, and perhaps a little bit nervous as well, while we waited for our Road Chief to be built and ultimately delivered in September 2019.

Our Road Chief is named “Cloudland” after a very special farm to table restaurant near Woodstock, Vermont where Karen and I shared a wonderful evening together and, even more significantly, decided to spend adventures together as well. As we anticipate bringing Cloudland out of storage later this spring, we look forward to our first on the road experiences as part of the “251 Club,” a uniquely Vermont institution that celebrates the visitation of every town in Vermont. Most do it by car, some by bicycle. We intend to do it by travel trailer. Who knows how long it will take, but for sure it will be fun in the beautiful Green Mountain State.

By the way, did I mention George? He would be barking mad if I didn’t. His rambunctious Airedale personality will be on full display as we log miles in Vermont, and we intend to devote a special section to cover his insights and perspectives along the way.

So that’s it! We are newbie bloggers and we hope you enjoy reading about our travels in Cloudland.
